22/02/2010 - Lib Dems announce help for carers

Liberal Democrats have announced a new policy in support of carers.

There are five million unpaid carers in this country and this number is only set to increase due to the ageing population.

Of these five million, whos efforts save £87 billion a year in paid care, over a million work over fifty hours a week, every week of the year. In support of these individuals, the Liberal Democrats are proposing that if anyone acts as an unpaid carer for over fifty hours a week, the government will pay for them to have a "week off", paying for a carer to perform that person's duties for the week.

 Denis Healy says:

"All people who act as carers for their loved ones are heroes. Their levels of compassion are beyond belief and they are examples of how society functions best."

"I applaud any offer of respite for these individuals, time for themselves to rest, relax and take a holiday. Whilst their efforts are valued and respected, everyone deserves some time to themselves."

"Support like this for unpaid carers makes me very proud to be a Liberal Democrat"
