Hull is a dynamic university city, a maritime port and gateway to Europe with strong traditions and proud people.

The constituency of Hull North consists of leafy avenues in the south of the constituency, filled with students and academics from the university, up to the council estates at Bransholme and Orchard Park, bordering the East Riding. Despite the economic blows of the 1980s, a strong community spirit survives in many of the people who moved from the fishing area in Hull to the new council estates in the 1970s.

The student area that exists around the university is buzzing with a dynamic and unique atmosphere. Café bars, coffee houses, pubs, clubs, restaurants and housing in these neighbourhoods have been developed around the thousands of young people who flood into Hull every year to live and study.

As a port city and a gateway to Europe, Hull has always maintained international links and these reflect the outward-looking nature of many Hull people.

David Cameron's Conservatives continue to be an irrelevance in Hull, only managing around 12% of the total vote at the 2005 General Election and the 2006 local elections.
