Fair deal for our troops

Date Created: 11/01/2010

Denis Healy is backing the Liberal Democrat campaign for a fairer deal for Britain’s troops. Serious questions have been raised about the basic levels of pay troops receive and the quality of equipment they have to use.

‘Despite putting their lives on the line for their country, our troops often get poor pay and do not have the equipment they need to do the job,’ said Denis Healy.

‘The Liberal Democrats want to raise the pay of our lowest paid soldiers by as much as £6000, and provide them with extra equipment to keep them safe,’ he added.

‘I have spoken to many resident’s in Hull who are appalled with the Labour Government’s failure to provide decent pay and equipment to our troops who fight so bravely for us have to do so on low pay and with inadequate equipment.’

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg was among the first to raise the problems of pay and equipment.

Nick Clegg said, ‘When I visited our troops in Afghanistan last year I saw the problems first-hand. We’ve got to stop this. That’s why the Liberal Democrats have brought forward new plans to give our troops the pay and equipment they need.’
