Biography
Denis Healy is the Liberal Democrat Local Campaigner in Hull.
He moved to the area 20 years ago to work at the old Needlers factory on Sculcoates Lane, and has genuine experience of the world of commerce, marketing and business development. He spent many years stimulating the economic development of Yorkshire, specialising in helping people to start small businesses, and now works with a major engineering institution helping to develop the next generation of professional engineers.
Denis stood for the Liberal Democrats in Hull North at the 2005 General Election, and achieved a magnificent swing from Labour cutting their majority by 3000 votes.
Denis firmly believes that Hull needs a local MP who will put the area first, whose first priority will always be to local residents and not the Government in London. Thanks to his efforts the Liberal Democrats are now closer than anyone has been in a generation to breaking Labour’s 43 year stranglehold on Hull North.
Denis campaigns hard, all year round, for a better deal for Hull. He has distributed two major surveys, on Crime and the NHS, to over 40,000 households in the Hull North constituency, and has organised petitions to save local Post Offices in Hull from closure. He has fought Labour cuts to the NHS, and for more police on the streets of Hull.
He has also launched a petition, in the wake of the devastating flooding Hull suffered in mid 2007, to improve the water pumping facilities in the Bransholme area of Hull.
Denis is married to Alison and has two grown up children, Sean and Maria, and a baby daughter Melanie, who was born in Hull Royal Infirmary in January 2007.
When he is not busy campaigning, Denis enjoys spending time with his family. His pastimes include refereeing football and acting with the Hull Playgoers Society who regularly perform at Hull Truck theatre.
